A similar eclecticism marks the practice of the critic from whom Kuipers inherited his Variety role: David Stratton. Stratton, the director of the Sydney Film Festival from 1966â1983 is best known for his film criticism, which appeared on Australian public broadcast television on SBS (The Movie Show 1986â2004) and later ABC (At the Movies 2004â2014) through his weekly review programme with co-host Margaret Pomeranz, and in The Australian newspaper where he is the lead film critic. Stratton, however, does not describe himself as a film critic, conceptually cordoning off the review work for which he is renowned from film criticism. Stratton regards reviewing as important, and he respects it as a form (particularly the sort practised in Variety), but he nevertheless sees it as a very strictly circumscribed, and therefore limiting, mode of critical practice:
I think [â¦] some of the best reviews [â¦] are written for Variety. By reviews I mean fairly concise analyses of films which are written very quickly. The reviewer sees the film, comes out, and writes the review, within an hour itâs in the paper. No time to think, no time to discuss. Thatâs very different from the role of a film critic who maybe doesnât have to write about current films, maybe [writes about] films that opened six months ago, and has a lot of time to discuss with his peers or her peers. Reviewers have to turn it over very quickly and Variety and the Hollywood Reporter and others particularly because thereâs a huge deadline, because itâs got to be on the web, like, now.
